On April 15, 2009, the Student Alliance for National Security (SANS) at Indiana University kicked-off its nationwide Declaration of Oil Independence project with a discussion on energy security.

Panelists included John Clark, former Senior Advisor to Governor Mitch Daniels; Ron Zucker, Legislative Director of 2020 Vision; Jesse Kharbanda, Executive Director of the Hoosier Environmental Council; and Bill Brown, Indiana University’s Director of Sustainability.

The initiative aimed to raise awareness of the importance of energy and climate change, with a targeted 100,000 signatures from young people across the country in the next year.

Starting April 15, the Declaration opened for signature online.

This program was co-sponsored by Union Board, College Democrats, Student Foreign Policy Initiative, and AIESEC.

Many people ask, “How Can I Help Reduce Our National Dependence On Oil?”. One obvious answer to this question is to select a vehicle that uses less petroleum. Also, there are other everyday ways to keep your car’s petroleum consumption as low as possible. You’ll not only benefit from lower operating costs, but probably cheap car insurance as well.

  Threatens the planet
  Transportation accounts for 30% of all US greenhouse gas emissions, a staggering 2 billion metric tons of CO2 per year, and that use is growing faster than all other sources of greenhouse gases.
  
  Distorts our foreign policy
  Whether it’s a commitment to protecting oil markets or limiting our policy choices, our oil use limits our standing in the world.
  
  Weakens our economy, shipping almost $1 billion per day overseas to pay for our oil imports. Moreover, energy prices have ripple effects in everything we do, from our farms to our industry.
